Thunder Bay is a Lake Superior city surrounded by some of Northwestern Ontario’s most dramatic scenery. The Sleeping Giant, Terry Fox Monument, Kakabeka Falls, waterfront, and grain elevators tell a story of nature, industry, resilience, and a community proud of its northern home.

The collaboration
The Thunder Bay Mug grew out of the wonderful response to my Sioux Lookout design. Thunder Bay had long been part of our family’s northern story. We have dear friends from the city, including a friend who helped build our house, and we often passed through on our travels. Those trips came with favorite routines, like bringing home Persians and stopping at Maltese Grocery for meat.
The Sleeping Giant is an unforgettable part of the view, while Terry Fox’s determination and the monument honoring him have inspired meaningful conversations in our family. Kakabeka Falls also belongs in our story because we passed it so often while driving between Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay.
I was drawn to The Habit Coffee & Bakeshop through the heart behind Urban Abbey and its ministry to women, its love for people, and its desire to share the hope of Christ. Collaborating on the Thunder Bay Mug with Kevin has been great.
The story behind the mug
Ashley partnered with The Habit Coffee & Bakeshop to create a mug rooted in Thunder Bay.
Research and community input highlighted Lake Superior, dramatic landscapes, local history, and the landmarks of Thunder Bay.
Ashley translated each selected place and symbol into an individual hand-drawn illustration.
The drawings were refined and arranged into a continuous design that rewards a closer look.
The finished mug became a locally available keepsake through The Habit Coffee & Bakeshop.
Inside the illustration
Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the community’s history, landscape, gathering places, and everyday life.
The famous peninsula rests on the Lake Superior horizon and defines the city’s waterfront view.
The memorial honours Terry Fox and overlooks the place where his Marathon of Hope paused.
The powerful waterfall west of the city is one of northwestern Ontario’s great natural landmarks.
The waterfront park connects public art, trails, gathering spaces, and the harbour.
The elevators along the harbour reflect Thunder Bay’s long role in Canadian transportation and trade.
Waves, ships, and rocky shoreline celebrate the vast lake beside the city.
The creative process
I built this design around Sleeping Giant, Terry Fox Monument, Kakabeka Falls, and Prince Arthur’s Landing. Each was drawn on its own, then adjusted and arranged until the finished wrap felt less like a collection of icons and more like a walk through Thunder Bay.
