The collaboration
Kenora was a familiar and welcome stop whenever our family traveled out of the remote First Nation community where we lived, often on the way from Sioux Lookout to Winnipeg. We would stop for lunch and shopping, enjoy Lake of the Woods Brewing Company, pick up coffee at Iron & Clay, and visit Abundance Home.
After seeing the response to the Sioux Lookout Mug, I contacted Abundance Home, where Nicole was excited to carry a Kenora design. I also connected with Krystal when Iron & Clay first opened and enjoyed collaborating with her until Jamie took over. It has continued to be a wonderful partnership. Along with the mug, we have created a 40-ounce tumbler for Iron & Clay and an exclusive tote featuring my artwork for Abundance Home.
Some of my favorite drawings are Husky the Muskie, the Otter floatplanes at the floatplane base, the MS Kenora, and Loonie Bear along the waterfront. Together with the many Lake of the Woods details, they celebrate the beauty and character that make Kenora so memorable.
The story behind the mug
Ashley partnered with Abundance Home and Iron & Clay to create a mug rooted in Kenora / Lake of the Woods.
Research and community input highlighted Lake of the Woods, harbour life, public art, and the landmarks that define Kenora.
Ashley translated each selected place and symbol into an individual hand-drawn illustration.
The drawings were refined and arranged into a continuous design that rewards a closer look.
The finished mug became a locally available keepsake through Abundance Home and Iron & Clay.
Inside the illustration
Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the community’s history, landscape, gathering places, and everyday life.
The giant fish statue is a beloved symbol of Kenora and its angling traditions.
Thousands of islands, rocky shores, and open water form the heart of the community.
The harbourfront canopy hosts markets, music, and gatherings beside the lake.
The excursion boat represents generations of travel and sightseeing on Lake of the Woods.
Large painted scenes share the people, industries, and stories of Kenora’s past.
Granite rock, pines, and wildlife capture the rugged landscape surrounding the city.
The creative process
I built this design around Husky the Muskie, Lake of the Woods, Whitecap Pavilion, and MS Kenora. Each was drawn on its own, then adjusted and arranged until the finished wrap felt less like a collection of icons and more like a walk through Kenora / Lake of the Woods.
