Atikokan’s identity as the Canoeing Capital of Canada made this such an enjoyable mug to create. My husband Matt spent a great deal of time canoeing as a child, especially through Boy Scouts, so the generations of Scouts and other paddlers who come to this beautiful area felt personally meaningful to us.
I first partnered with Tina at TS Wellness to offer the Atikokan Mug and a coordinating tumbler. After her shop closed, the mug found a new home at Atikokan Pharmacy, and it has been great to collaborate with their team.
We were genuinely amazed by the community’s response. The mug continues to sell well, and the enthusiasm of the entire town has been such an encouragement. Atikokan is beautiful, welcoming, and a place I would love to celebrate through more artwork in the future.
The story behind the mug
Ashley partnered with Atikokan Pharmacy to create a mug rooted in Atikokan.
Research and community input highlighted canoeing, mining history, waterfalls, and the wilderness surrounding Atikokan.
Ashley translated each selected place and symbol into an individual hand-drawn illustration.
The drawings were refined and arranged into a continuous design that rewards a closer look.
The finished mug became a locally available keepsake through Atikokan Pharmacy.
Inside the illustration
Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the community’s history, landscape, gathering places, and everyday life.
Lakes, portages, and wilderness reflect Atikokan’s identity as the Canoeing Capital of Canada.
The waterfall and surrounding trails offer a favourite place to experience the local landscape.
The former mining community and nearby lake preserve an important chapter of local history.
The remote log castle is one of the region’s most unusual and memorable landmarks.
A canoe and paddle celebrate the routes that connect the lakes around Atikokan.
Moose, loons, and evergreens represent the forests and waterways of northwestern Ontario.
The creative process
I used Quetico Provincial Park to establish the setting, then added Little Falls, Steep Rock, and White Otter Castle as the drawing moved around the mug. Balancing scenery with familiar local places helped the finished piece feel rooted in the way Atikokan is actually experienced.
