The collaboration
The Sioux Lookout Mug began with local research and a collaboration with The Hub Collective Cafe. Ashley translated the community’s recognizable places and shared references into an original drawing designed for everyday use.
The Sioux Lookout Mug became a strong local seller through The Hub Collective Cafe, with more than one hundred mugs and a run of tumblers sold during the 2026 summer season before another restock was requested.
Each element began as an individual hand drawing. Ashley refined the artwork and arranged the pieces into a continuous design made to wrap around a ceramic mug, creating a keepsake that feels specific to Sioux Lookout.
The story behind the mug
Ashley partnered with The Hub Collective Cafe to create a mug rooted in Sioux Lookout.
Research and community input highlighted railway history, northern lakes, aviation, and beloved Sioux Lookout traditions.
Ashley translated each selected place and symbol into an individual hand-drawn illustration.
The drawings were refined and arranged into a continuous design that rewards a closer look.
The finished mug became a locally available keepsake through The Hub Collective Cafe.
Inside the illustration
Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the community’s history, landscape, gathering places, and everyday life.
The station reflects the railway connection that shaped the town’s growth and identity.
The lake represents fishing, paddling, sunsets, and life along the waterfront.
The park and beach are a familiar gathering place beside Pelican Lake.
Blueberries and festival details celebrate the community’s signature summer event.
Bush planes represent Sioux Lookout’s role as a hub for remote northern communities.
The nearby landmark and trail connect the town to its rocky boreal landscape.

The creative process
I started with the lines and character of Sioux Lookout Railway Station, then brought in Pelican Lake, Umfreville Park, and Blueberry Festival. The challenge was giving every drawing room to be recognized while still making the mug feel like one connected piece.
