The Rio Grande Valley is a place of vibrant communities, deep traditions, remarkable wildlife, and landscapes shaped by the river and its resacas. Citrus groves, birding destinations, historic town centers, and borderland culture give residents a strong shared identity and visitors a rich region to explore.

The collaboration
The Rio Grande Valley Mug began with local research and a collaboration with 7th and Park. Ashley translated the community’s recognizable places and shared references into an original drawing designed for everyday use.
Ashley’s Rio Grande Valley collaboration with 7th and Park grew from strong community demand, including an earlier mug release that sold through at the shop.
Each element began as an individual hand drawing. Ashley refined the artwork and arranged the pieces into a continuous design made to wrap around a ceramic mug, creating a keepsake that feels specific to Rio Grande Valley.
The story behind the mug
Ashley partnered with the Brownsville coffee shop to create a mug celebrating the wider Rio Grande Valley.
Nature, agriculture, culture, history, and community traditions shaped the regional design.
Ashley turned familiar wildlife, landmarks, and local symbols into individual hand-drawn studies.
The pieces were refined and arranged into one continuous composition connecting the Valley.
An earlier run sold through at 7th and Park, showing how strongly local customers connected with the design.
Inside the illustration
Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the community’s history, landscape, gathering places, and everyday life.
Winding waterways represent the landscape that gives the Valley its name and character.
A tiger recalls Brownsville’s beloved zoo and its role in wildlife conservation.
The courthouse and downtown architecture honor the history of the region’s southernmost city.
Green jays, chachalacas, and butterflies celebrate one of North America’s richest wildlife corridors.
Oranges, limes, and grapefruit reflect the Valley’s agricultural heritage.
Music, food, sports, and shared celebrations represent the culture connecting Valley communities.
The creative process
I began with Rio Grande and Resacas and used it to set the pace of the composition. Adding Gladys Porter Zoo, Historic Brownsville, and Valley Birding brought architecture, gathering places, and local character together without making the mug feel like a list of landmarks.

Whether someone has just moved to Rio Grande Valley, Texas, is preparing to leave, or still calls it home from miles away, this hometown mug offers a warm and useful connection to the community.
