The collaboration

A personal connection, drawn into every detail.

The East End Houston Mug began through a connection formed around the Galveston Mug. After Martha saw my work at Seawall Coffee and asked Paula about the artist, Paula introduced us. That connection led to a wonderful collaboration with Martha and Miguel at Segundo Coffee Lab.

They shared so much of the East End’s rich history, deep roots, and community character with me. Their knowledge shaped the details and helped make the finished design feel grounded in the neighborhood it celebrates.

For this mug, I stepped outside my usual palette and used Segundo’s vibrant colors. The brighter scheme felt true to the culture and energy we were trying to capture. I am thankful for the collaboration and proud that the mug has a home at Segundo Coffee Lab.

The story behind the mug

The connections that brought The East End Houston Mug to life.

  1. Segundo Coffee Lab shares its neighborhood

Ashley partnered with Segundo Coffee Lab to create a mug centered on Houston’s East End.

  2. Local voices guide the artwork

Murals, music, transit, sports, industry, and neighborhood gathering places shaped the design.

  3. East End details take shape

Ashley created each building, sign, and symbol by hand before bringing the pieces together.

  4. The neighborhood wraps around the mug

Bright accents and black linework were arranged into a continuous celebration of the East End.

  5. The mug joins everyday coffee routines

The finished design became part of Segundo’s community at its Milby Street and Lawndale locations.

The creative process

Making room for the many sides of East End Houston.

The Esplanade at Navigation and East End Murals gave this design its first direction, while Houston Skyline and Houston Dynamo added another side of the community’s character. I refined the spacing by hand so every turn of the mug reveals something familiar.
