Town
Palatine combines an active downtown, beautiful parks, and traditions that bring the village together throughout the year. The Metra station, Clayson House, Cutting Hall, local stables, and community events give residents a hometown identity that feels both lively and familiar.
The collaboration
The Palatine Mug was created with Mike and Rosanna Shipley at Conscious Cup. Our collaboration began with the Crystal Lake Mug, and they later invited me to create mugs for each of their locations. It has been truly enjoyable working with them and the Conscious Cup staff.
Palatine also felt familiar to my husband Matt, who grew up in Crystal Lake. Located along Route 14 and the Metra line into Chicago, it was one of the communities he regularly passed through while growing up. That personal familiarity gave the collaboration another natural connection to our family.
The people behind Conscious Cup
Every mug in this collection grew from a creative partnership with Conscious Cup. It has been a joy to collaborate with owners Michael Shipley and Roseanna Shipley as these five local designs found their way into the cafes and communities they serve.
The story behind the mug
Ashley’s Crystal Lake design connected with the Conscious Cup team and opened the door to a larger hometown collection.
Each hand-drawn study was refined and arranged into a continuous composition designed to wrap around the mug.
Conscious Cup introduced the finished Palatine design alongside the full five-town collection and its local storytelling campaign.
Inside the illustration
Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the village’s history, gathering places, and community life.
The station and its clock tower represent the railway connection at the center of downtown Palatine.
Storefronts, streetlights, and familiar gathering places capture the character of the village center.
The restored historic home honors Palatine’s nineteenth-century roots and local history.
The longtime performing arts center represents generations of local plays, concerts, and community events.
A horse and rider celebrate the village’s beloved equestrian tradition.
Food, music, hockey, and baseball details reflect the festivals and shared interests that bring neighbors together.
From one town to five
The Crystal Lake Mug opened the door to four more town designs: Cary, Barrington, Palatine, and Libertyville. Conscious Cup introduced all five in November 2022 with a coordinated campaign focused on Ashley’s hand-drawn process and the local identity of every cafe community.
The mugs were created as generously sized, 15 oz latte-style keepsakes, meant to be used at home while keeping a familiar place close at hand.
