The collaboration

Barrington, gathered into one continuous drawing.

“We immediately loved it.”The Conscious Cup team on Ashley’s first Illinois hometown mug

The Barrington Mug grew from the same invitation that expanded Ashley’s Crystal Lake design into a five-town Conscious Cup collection. Each mug needed to feel connected to the larger series while remaining unmistakably rooted in its own community.

Ashley combined familiar Barrington architecture, local character, and small illustrative details into one wraparound design. Conscious Cup helped bring the finished piece into the cafe where neighbors already gathered.

The collection launched in November 2022 with individual town photography and a coordinated social campaign. Barrington’s stop-motion mug video was used as an early example of how the five local stories could be introduced together.

The story behind the mug

The people and places behind The Barrington Mug.

  1. The first Illinois mug

Ashley’s Crystal Lake design connected with the Conscious Cup team and opened the door to a larger hometown collection.

  2. An invitation to draw the community

Conscious Cup invited Ashley to create a distinct Barrington mug for the cafe community now served by Cook Street Coffee.

  3. Local character took shape

Ashley gathered Barrington’s architecture, parks, school traditions, and equestrian identity into a collection of individual drawings.

  4. The drawings became one story

Each study was refined and arranged into a continuous composition designed to wrap around the mug.

  5. The Barrington Mug launched

Conscious Cup introduced the finished design alongside the original five-town collection and its community storytelling campaign.

From one town to five

A collection rooted in local coffee shops.

The Crystal Lake Mug opened the door to four more town designs: Cary, Barrington, Palatine, and Libertyville. Conscious Cup introduced all five in November 2022 with a coordinated campaign focused on Ashley’s hand-drawn process and the local identity of every cafe community.

The mugs were created as generously sized, 15 oz latte-style keepsakes, meant to be used at home while keeping a familiar place close at hand.

The creative process

Finding the rhythm of Barrington, one drawing at a time.

I drew Historic Downtown Barrington, Barrington’s White House, Langendorf Park, and Barrington Metra Station as individual pieces before bringing them together. Their different shapes and stories gave me the rhythm for a wraparound composition that feels layered, personal, and specific to Barrington.

A meaningful local gift

Made for the people who carry Barrington with them.

Whether someone has just moved to Barrington, Illinois, is preparing to leave, or still calls it home from miles away, this hometown mug offers a warm and useful connection to the community.
