Barrington pairs small-town warmth with a beautiful historic downtown, vibrant community life, and room to enjoy the outdoors. From Barrington’s White House to the Metra station and its equestrian countryside, the village feels both connected and distinctly its own.
The collaboration
After I created the Crystal Lake Mug, Michael and Roseanna Shipley invited me to make mugs for more of the communities served by Conscious Cup. Barrington was one of them, and I was excited to draw a design that celebrated the town and the coffee shop known there as Cook Street Coffee.
I researched Barrington’s local history and familiar places, drew the details by hand, and brought them together around the mug. The partnership has been a joy, and the community received the Barrington Mug so well that we also made a tumbler version.
I am thankful for Michael, Roseanna, and the Conscious Cup team. Working together has given me the chance to celebrate Barrington through a shop with its own meaningful place in the community.
The people behind Conscious Cup
Every mug in this collection grew from a creative partnership with Conscious Cup. It has been a joy to collaborate with owners Michael Shipley and Roseanna Shipley as these five local designs found their way into the cafes and communities they serve.
The story behind the mug
Each study was refined and arranged into a continuous composition designed to wrap around the mug.
Conscious Cup introduced the finished design alongside the original five-town collection and its community storytelling campaign.

From one town to five
The Crystal Lake Mug opened the door to four more town designs: Cary, Barrington, Palatine, and Libertyville. Conscious Cup introduced all five in November 2022 with a coordinated campaign focused on Ashley’s hand-drawn process and the local identity of every cafe community.
The mugs were created as generously sized, 15 oz latte-style keepsakes, meant to be used at home while keeping a familiar place close at hand.
