Community

Naperville, Illinois

Naperville pairs a lively downtown with beautiful public spaces and traditions that make a large city feel personal. The Riverwalk, Dandelion Fountain, Moser Tower, Centennial Beach, and Naper Settlement offer residents and visitors a memorable mix of history, recreation, and community life.

The collaboration

A personal connection, drawn into every detail.

My connection to Naperville goes back to childhood. I grew up in neighboring Plainfield, and Naperville was where our family frequently went for shopping, restaurants, activities, and time with friends. My family still visits today to shop, spend time together, and enjoy everything the city offers.

The Riverwalk and Centennial Beach were my favorite elements to draw. They represent the beauty, energy, and public spaces that make Naperville such an enjoyable community for residents and visitors alike.

The Naperville Mug has been a wonderful collaboration with Blackberry Market. I love working together to celebrate the community, and it has been especially good working with Neil, the manager there.

Celebrating the community

The story behind the mug

How a love for Naperville became a wraparound story.

  1. Naperville begins with family memories

Growing up in neighboring Plainfield, Ashley visited Naperville with her family for shopping, restaurants, activities, and time with friends.

  2. The character of the place comes into focus

Research and community input highlighted the Riverwalk, local history, downtown gathering places, and beloved civic landmarks.

  3. Naperville takes shape

Ashley translated each selected place and symbol into an individual hand-drawn illustration.

  4. One community story from every side

The drawings were refined and arranged into a continuous design that rewards a closer look.

  5. The mug finds its home at Blackberry Market

Working with Neil and the Blackberry Market team brought the Naperville Mug to the community alongside Ashley’s other hometown designs.

The creative process

Drawing Naperville from the water outward.

I let Naperville Riverwalk lead this drawing, then worked Dandelion Fountain, Moser Tower, and Centennial Beach into the scene around it. That flow gave me a natural way to carry the parts of Naperville people know best across the full curve of the mug.
