Community
Lemont is a one-of-a-kind canal town built from limestone, industry, and generations of local pride. The historic downtown, I&M Canal, quarries, water tower, and outdoor adventure at The Forge make it a distinctive home and a rewarding place to visit.
The collaboration
The Lemont Mug was a special and very intentional project. I worked carefully to get the local elements right and to create a design that genuinely celebrates the community.
I originally collaborated with Tess at Folklore Coffee, where the mug was offered during its first Christmas season. When that season ended, I wanted to make sure the mug remained available to the many people who had supported it, so it transitioned to Mabel’s Market.
The community’s enthusiasm has continued, and I am incredibly thankful for the support surrounding both Lemont and the mug.
The story behind the mug
Inside the illustration
Completed in 1848, the Illinois and Michigan Canal helped establish Lemont and opened a vital transportation route through the region.
Former limestone quarries now hold open water and trails at Heritage Quarries Recreation Area, where migrating ducks, coots, and grebes stop seasonally.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, downtown Lemont reflects the village’s canal-era growth and limestone heritage.
The Forge Lemont Quarries turns the quarry landscape into an outdoor adventure park with climbing walls, high ropes, and ziplining over the water.
The village’s State Street water tower is a recognizable landmark in Lemont’s municipal water system.
Locally quarried Joliet-Lemont limestone, also called Athens Marble, built Lemont landmarks and supplied Chicago’s historic Water Tower.
