Harlingen reflects the warmth and color of the Rio Grande Valley, with a walkable historic district, rich agricultural roots, and nature close by. Jackson Street, the Arroyo Colorado, local wildlife, and the Iwo Jima Memorial tell a story residents know with pride and visitors can appreciate.

The collaboration
While our family lived in nearby Los Fresnos, Harlingen was part of everyday life. We had friends there, went shopping and out to dinner, visited the hospital, enjoyed Bass Pro Shops, and regularly flew from the Harlingen airport when traveling to see family in Chicago.
I love the palm trees that greet travelers along the highway and the character of Jackson Street. I also find the region’s hunting ranches fascinating, and those South Texas influences helped shape the mug.
After finishing the Harlingen Mug, I approached Girl of All Trades, and they were excited to carry it. It has been great working with Eduardo and seeing the design find a local home.
The story behind the mug
The Harlingen Mug began as a local partnership celebrating the community around Jackson Street.
Downtown, agriculture, wildlife, sports, and regional traditions shaped the illustration.
Ashley translated each selected place and symbol into an individual hand-drawn study.
The drawings were refined and arranged into one continuous Harlingen story.
Girl of All Trades continued selling the design as inventory dropped to its final mugs.
Inside the illustration
Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the community’s history, landscape, gathering places, and everyday life.
The downtown arch and historic storefronts celebrate the heart of Harlingen.
The monument honors the city’s connection to Marine Military Academy and a nationally recognized image.
The waterway and surrounding landscape reflect Harlingen’s place in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
Green jays, orioles, butterflies, and native plants celebrate the region’s exceptional birding habitat.
Citrus and cultivated fields represent the farming traditions surrounding the city.
Athletics and school spirit honor a familiar part of community life.
The creative process
I built this design around Jackson Street, Iwo Jima Memorial, Arroyo Colorado, and Valley Wildlife. Each was drawn on its own, then adjusted and arranged until the finished wrap felt less like a collection of icons and more like a walk through Harlingen.
