Town

Crystal Lake, Illinois

Crystal Lake combines a true hometown feel with lakeside recreation, historic character, and a downtown full of local life. Main Beach, The Dole, Veteran Acres, and community traditions give residents plenty to be proud of and visitors a welcoming reason to stay awhile.

The collaboration

The mug that began the Conscious Cup collection.

“We immediately loved it.”The Conscious Cup team on Ashley’s first Illinois hometown mug

The Crystal Lake Mug began with a personal connection. Ashley grew up visiting Main Beach with close family friends. Years later, she met her future husband, Matt, and learned that he had grown up in Crystal Lake. They still wonder whether their paths may have crossed much earlier during a game on the old wooden playground or a summer afternoon near the dock.

In the summer of 2022, Ashley brought Conscious Cup a mug wrapped in her hand-drawn interpretation of Crystal Lake. The team immediately connected with it. That first collaboration became the starting point for a five-town collection created for each Conscious Cup cafe.

The finished mug is both a community keepsake and a piece of Ashley’s own family story, connecting childhood memories, Matt’s hometown, and a coffee shop rooted in the community.

The artwork

Familiar places, drawn one line at a time.

The Crystal Lake design grew from individual studies of the places, traditions, and community details residents recognize. Each drawing was refined by hand before becoming part of the finished wraparound composition.

From one town to five

A collection rooted in local coffee shops.

The Crystal Lake Mug opened the door to four more town designs: Cary, Barrington, Palatine, and Libertyville. Conscious Cup introduced all five in November 2022 with a coordinated campaign focused on Ashley’s hand-drawn process and the local identity of every cafe community.

The mugs were created as generously sized, 15 oz latte-style keepsakes, meant to be used at home while keeping a familiar place close at hand.

The creative process

Letting Main Beach carry the story.

Main Beach became the visual thread for this mug. I drew The Dole, Lippold Park, and Veteran Acres around it so the finished wrap moves through Crystal Lake the way a familiar view or favorite drive does.
