The collaboration
The Burlington Mug began through mutual friends who knew Jimmy, the owner of Tamp Coffee Co. They believed a mug celebrating the community served by his shop would be a wonderful fit, and collaborating with Jimmy turned it into a fun and meaningful project.
Burlington offered so many beautiful things to draw. I especially love the pier and waterfront, Village Square, and the wonderful red telephone booth. Together they capture some of the culture, character, and beauty that make Burlington such an inviting place.
Drawn by hand
Ashley drew the Burlington details individually before arranging them into the finished wraparound design.
The local coffee shop connection
Tamp Coffee Co. became the local home for a mug designed to celebrate the community its cafés serve.
The story behind the mug
Ashley partnered with Tamp Coffee Co. to create a mug rooted in Burlington.
Research and community input highlighted the Lake Ontario waterfront, gardens, historic streets, and Burlington community life.
Ashley translated each selected place and symbol into an individual hand-drawn illustration.
The drawings were refined and arranged into a continuous design that rewards a closer look.
The finished mug became a locally available keepsake through Tamp Coffee Co.

Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the community’s history, landscape, gathering places, and everyday life.
The sweeping pier reaches over Lake Ontario at the foot of downtown Burlington.
The waterfront park represents festivals, walking paths, and views across the lake.
Flowers and garden details celebrate the renowned natural spaces beside Burlington.
The lift bridge marks the waterway between Burlington Bay and Lake Ontario.
Brick walkways and historic-style buildings create a charming downtown gathering place.
The escarpment, trails, and surrounding green space reflect Burlington’s varied landscape.
The creative process
I began with Brant Street Pier and used it to set the pace of the composition. Adding Spencer Smith Park, Royal Botanical Gardens, and Burlington Canal Lift Bridge brought architecture, gathering places, and local character together without making the mug feel like a list of landmarks.
