The collaboration
Winnipeg holds so many family memories for us. During our years in the North, it was where we went for vacations, shopping, time away, and the simple delight of letting the kids swim at a hotel pool. It became a place where our family could rest and enjoy being together.
Our children loved visiting the Royal Canadian Mint and watching coins being made. We also enjoyed the aviation museum, the city’s museums, and Assiniboine Park Zoo, where the polar bears were a favorite for one of my daughters. The buffalo, the Jets, and Winnipeg’s deep aviation and Royal Canadian Air Force history all found their way into the design. One of my favorite humorous details is the car buried in snow because it captures a very real part of Winnipeg life.
Working with Ben at Fools & Horses has been so good. Their shop at The Forks is a fitting home for one of my favorite mugs and for a design filled with places our family genuinely loves.
The story behind the mug
Ashley partnered with Fools & Horses to create a mug rooted in Winnipeg.
Research and community input highlighted architecture, rivers, gathering places, and the creative energy of Winnipeg.
Ashley translated each selected place and symbol into an individual hand-drawn illustration.
The drawings were refined and arranged into a continuous design that rewards a closer look.
The finished mug became a locally available keepsake through Fools & Horses.

Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the community’s history, landscape, gathering places, and everyday life.
The meeting of the Red and Assiniboine rivers has long been a gathering place in the heart of Winnipeg.
The pedestrian bridge creates a graceful connection across the Red River.
The museum’s distinctive tower has become a defining part of the city skyline.
The grand building and its Golden Boy are enduring symbols of Winnipeg.
The park represents gardens, paths, wildlife, and generations of family outings.
Historic warehouses, theatres, and creative spaces celebrate Winnipeg’s architectural character.
The creative process
I drew The Forks, Esplanade Riel, Canadian Museum for Human Rights, and Manitoba Legislative Building as individual pieces before bringing them together. Their different shapes and stories gave me the rhythm for a wraparound composition that feels layered, personal, and specific to Winnipeg.
