The collaboration
Our connection to Thompson comes through dear friends, especially Frank and Cheryl, whose company SkyCare began there. Our third baby was born in their home, and I spent two weeks there waiting for the birth while drawing the very first mug I ever made to sell in a coffee shop, the Sioux Lookout Mug.
Frank, Cheryl, and their children collaborated with me on the Thompson design and shared so much local insight. It was meaningful to create something together that celebrated the community where they once lived and grew up. Another friend, Kevin, also grew up in Thompson, and learning from him added even more depth. The absolute beauty of Pisew Falls especially stood out to me.
Thompson serves as a vital hub for the North and for many Indigenous communities, a role our family understands from our years in Northern Canada. Its cold-weather testing, aviation links, and position along the train route to Churchill add to its distinctive story. We later approached Lucy at Lambert’s Home Decor & Gifts, and it has been wonderful working with her on the mug and tumbler.
The story behind the mug
Ashley partnered with Lambert’s Home Decor & Gifts to create a mug rooted in Thompson.
Research and community input highlighted northern landscape, mining history, public art, and everyday Thompson landmarks.
Ashley translated each selected place and symbol into an individual hand-drawn illustration.
The drawings were refined and arranged into a continuous design that rewards a closer look.
The finished mug became a locally available keepsake through Lambert’s Home Decor & Gifts.
Inside the illustration
Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the community’s history, landscape, gathering places, and everyday life.
The walking route and its public art celebrate Thompson’s stories, people, and northern identity.
The enormous painted wolf is a striking landmark along Thompson’s Spirit Way.
The miner statue honours the industry that played a central role in the city’s development.
The river and surrounding boreal landscape reflect the natural setting around Thompson.
The museum preserves northern history, wildlife displays, and community stories.
The aurora represents the vivid night skies visible across northern Manitoba.
The creative process
I built this design around Spirit Way, Wolf Mural, King Miner, and Burntwood River. Each was drawn on its own, then adjusted and arranged until the finished wrap felt less like a collection of icons and more like a walk through Thompson.
