The collaboration
I created the Winkler and Morden mugs as a pair and first presented them to Zach at Whitecap Coffee. It was wonderful collaborating with him, and since the ownership transitioned to Brittany, it has been equally good working with her to continue celebrating both communities.
Our family’s deepest connection to Winkler is through friends. We have visited friends there, partnered together in ministry, discussed our shared faith around their tables, and spent unhurried time drinking coffee and tea in their homes. Those gatherings are my favorite memories of Winkler because the people are what I love most.
The community’s Mennonite heritage, the importance of faith, and the traditions surrounding harvest all helped shape a mug intended to feel closely connected to the place.
The story behind the mug
Ashley partnered with Whitecap Winkler to create a mug rooted in Winkler.
Research and community input highlighted prairie agriculture, community celebrations, and familiar Winkler gathering places.
Ashley translated each selected place and symbol into an individual hand-drawn illustration.
The drawings were refined and arranged into a continuous design that rewards a closer look.
The finished mug became a locally available keepsake through Whitecap Winkler.
Inside the illustration
Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the community’s history, landscape, gathering places, and everyday life.
The downtown park offers a green gathering place surrounded by Winkler’s civic life.
Festival details celebrate music, food, and a favourite summer tradition.
Fields, grain, and farm imagery honour the work that shaped the community.
Historic farm buildings and machinery preserve the story of the surrounding region.
The recreation complex represents hockey, skating, and year-round community activity.
A broad horizon and changing seasons capture the southern Manitoba landscape.
The creative process
I began this mug with Bethel Heritage Park, then built outward through Winkler Harvest Festival, Agricultural Heritage, and Pembina Threshermen’s Museum. Drawing those elements by hand let me preserve their individual character while tying them together through the landscape.
