Tehachapi is a mountain community where railroad history, aviation, wind energy, and wide California landscapes meet. The famous Loop, historic depot, sailplanes, downtown, and surrounding peaks give residents a distinctive sense of home and travelers a memorable reason to stop.

The collaboration
The Tehachapi Mug began with local research and a collaboration with Mountain Coffee House. Ashley translated the community’s recognizable places and shared references into an original drawing designed for everyday use.
The Tehachapi Mug continues through Mountain Coffee House, where another sizeable restock was requested in September 2026.
Each element began as an individual hand drawing. Ashley refined the artwork and arranged the pieces into a continuous design made to wrap around a ceramic mug, creating a keepsake that feels specific to Tehachapi.
The story behind the mug
Ashley partnered with Mountain Coffee House to create a mug rooted in Tehachapi.
Research and community input highlighted railroad history, mountain scenery, wind energy, aviation, and the character of downtown Tehachapi.
Ashley translated each selected place and symbol into an individual hand-drawn illustration.
The drawings were refined and arranged into a continuous design that rewards a closer look.
The finished mug became a locally available keepsake through Mountain Coffee House.
Inside the illustration
Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the community’s history, landscape, gathering places, and everyday life.
The working railroad loop is an internationally recognized feat of nineteenth-century engineering.
The restored depot preserves the story of the railroads and the legendary Loop.
Rows of turbines across the pass reflect the area’s long connection to wind energy.
The surrounding peaks and high valley give the community its distinctive landscape.
Local storefronts and civic buildings form the walkable heart of town.
Mountain winds and nearby glider activity celebrate Tehachapi’s connection to flight.
The creative process
I built this design around Tehachapi Loop, Tehachapi Depot Railroad Museum, Tehachapi Pass Wind Farms, and Tehachapi Mountains. Each was drawn on its own, then adjusted and arranged until the finished wrap felt less like a collection of icons and more like a walk through Tehachapi.
