Community
Mokena is a close-knit community where historic Front Street, neighborhood parks, and local traditions create an easy sense of belonging. Hickory Creek, the Metra station, Yunker Farm, and familiar gathering places reflect a village that values both its roots and its future.
The collaboration
The wonderful response to my Tinley Park Mug made me want to celebrate another nearby community. I decided to create a Mokena Mug and began drawing the places and details that make the village recognizable to the people who call it home.
After finishing the design, I reached out to WaterShed Cafe and Books and connected with Trish. I loved that it was both a coffee shop and a Christian bookstore, a welcoming place where people could gather. I was excited to see the mug find a home there and am grateful to Trish and the WaterShed team for carrying it.

Inside the illustration
Front Street anchors downtown Mokena beside the Rock Island rail corridor, connecting local businesses with the village’s commuter station.
Hickory Creek Preserve protects forest, prairie, savanna, and wetland habitat around Mokena, with trails linking the area’s natural spaces.
The downtown Front Street station serves Metra’s Rock Island route, linking Mokena with Chicago’s LaSalle Street Station.
The McGovney-Yunker Homestead at Yunker Park entered the National Register of Historic Places in 2006 for its role in local history.
Main Park is a Mokena gathering place for concerts, movies, sports leagues, summer camps, and community celebrations.
