The collaboration
I made the Lee’s Summit Mug for my in-laws, who live in the community. My mother-in-law contributed so much research, helping identify the places and details that would make the artwork feel true to their hometown.
I am also thankful for Vicky and her family at Whistle Stop Coffee and for their collaboration on the mug. It has been great working with them and seeing the design find a home in the community.
Two of my favorite elements are the historic Longview Farm water tower and the cow, which represents the farm’s rich agricultural and dairy heritage.
The story behind the mug
Ashley partnered with Whistle Stop Coffee to create a mug rooted in Lee’s Summit.
Research and community input highlighted historic downtown, railroad roots, parks, lakes, and the legacy of Longview Farm.
Ashley translated each selected place and symbol into an individual hand-drawn illustration.
The drawings were refined and arranged into a continuous design that rewards a closer look.
The finished mug became a locally available keepsake through Whistle Stop Coffee.
Inside the illustration
Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the community’s history, landscape, gathering places, and everyday life.
Brick storefronts, local businesses, and community events give downtown its distinctive character.
The grand residence preserves the story and architecture of the historic Longview Farm estate.
The museum shares the people, railroad roots, and growth of the community.
The lake and surrounding parkland represent recreation and time outdoors near the city.
Trails, open spaces, and neighborhood gathering places reflect everyday life in Lee’s Summit.
Historic buildings and demonstrations preserve the region’s nineteenth-century stories.
The creative process
Historic Downtown Lee’s Summit and Longview Mansion gave this design its first direction, while Lee’s Summit History Museum and Longview Lake added another side of the community’s character. I refined the spacing by hand so every turn of the mug reveals something familiar.
