The collaboration
The Duluth Mug began with local research and a collaboration with Yellow Bike Coffee. Ashley translated the community’s recognizable places and shared references into an original drawing designed for everyday use.
The Duluth Mug has remained in demand at Yellow Bike Coffee, leading the shop to request another sizeable restock in September 2026.
Each element began as an individual hand drawing. Ashley refined the artwork and arranged the pieces into a continuous design made to wrap around a ceramic mug, creating a keepsake that feels specific to Duluth.
The story behind the mug
Ashley partnered with Yellow Bike Coffee to create a mug rooted in Duluth.
Research and community input highlighted Lake Superior, maritime history, hillside views, rail heritage, and the landmarks along Duluth’s waterfront.
Ashley translated each selected place and symbol into an individual hand-drawn illustration.
The drawings were refined and arranged into a continuous design that rewards a closer look.
The finished mug became a locally available keepsake through Yellow Bike Coffee.
Inside the illustration
Each element celebrates a recognizable part of the community’s history, landscape, gathering places, and everyday life.
The bridge rises above the ship canal and has become one of Duluth’s most recognizable sights.
The world’s largest freshwater lake shapes Duluth’s horizon, weather, and daily life.
The waterfront district brings together the lakewalk, ships, local shops, and views of the harbor.
The stone tower overlooks the city, harbor, and Lake Superior from high above Duluth.
The historic lakeside estate reflects a grand chapter of Duluth’s past.
The former Union Depot preserves the city’s railroad history and cultural life.
The creative process
The shape of Aerial Lift Bridge helped establish the look of this mug. From there, I layered in Lake Superior, Canal Park, and Enger Tower, using the contrasts between them to create a wraparound drawing that could only belong to Duluth.
