Woodstock’s connection to the film Groundhog Day is an essential part of the community’s story and one of the details that makes the mug so recognizable. I also found the town’s history with typewriters fascinating while researching the artwork.
The flower bouquet on the mug is a nod to the farmers market and to Ethereal’s own roots there. That connection between a beloved local business, the market, and the life of the town helped give the illustration a deeper sense of place.
The story behind the mug
One of Ethereal’s owners reached out with the idea of creating a mug for the Woodstock cafe.
A planning conversation surfaced the landmarks, traditions, and local history that make Woodstock immediately recognizable.
A first wraparound design and mug mockups went to Ethereal for feedback from people who know the town well.
One of Ethereal’s owners suggested the Farmers Market and its familiar flower bouquets. Ashley added both to the finished artwork.
The finished mugs reached Ethereal, ready to become part of Woodstock homes, gifts, and morning routines.

The creative process
I made Woodstock Square the center of this drawing, then folded in the Opera House, the typewriter, and the town’s Groundhog Day connection. Those details move from historic architecture to playful local history, which is exactly what makes the finished mug feel so distinctly Woodstock.
