Community
Batavia’s creative energy and Fox River setting give the city a character that feels both historic and fresh. The Depot Museum, riverfront windmills, Boardwalk Shops, community markets, and beloved local events make downtown a place residents treasure and visitors want to explore.
The collaboration
Batavia is not far from our family, and we have friends who live there. Set along the Fox River, it is an absolutely beautiful place, and creating the mug gave me the opportunity to celebrate a community that already felt familiar to us.
I made the Batavia Mug in collaboration with Limestone Coffee & Tea and connected with Joy there. It has been great working with her, and the community has shown the mug so much support.
The windmills and Batavia Bulldogs are two of the local elements I especially loved incorporating into the artwork.
The story behind the mug
Inside the illustration
The historic depot’s distinctive roofline and station building appear in the drawing, celebrating Batavia’s railroad heritage.
A many-bladed wind pump on an open tower celebrates the windmills associated with Batavia. This is a different design from Geneva’s Fabyan Windmill.
Water, wooded banks, and riverside buildings bring Batavia’s Fox River setting into the wraparound scene.
A bridge bearing the words “Peace on Earth” crosses the river in the illustration, adding a recognizable detail from Batavia’s riverfront.
The bulldog mascot adds a playful expression of Batavia’s local school and community pride.
